Learn about Rhythm
The Fundamentals of Rhythm, by Kyle Coughlin, is a thorough, step-by-step introduction to almost every aspect of rhythm. The introduction of the book covers beat, tempo, meter, durations, rhythmic notation, note values, measures, and time signatures. The lessons of the book teach quarter notes, half notes, whole notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes, triplets, thirty-second notes, sixty-forth notes, dotted notes, double dotted notes, and all of their equivalent rests. The lessons also will educate students on ties, pickup notes, syncopations, and the time signatures of 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, cut time, 3/8, 4/8, 6/8, compound meters, and odd meters of 5/4, 7/4, 5/8, and 7/8.
The book does far more than just explain each of these topics, though. All 22 lessons include at least 18 rhythm patterns (there are over 450 in the book) for you to practice. Audio recordings of each pattern have been performed by RhythmBot and are available on this website so you can learn each topic through experience instead of just reading about it.
The book is useful for many different musicians. For students of music fundamentals, the book provides a clear, step-by-step approach to learning all about rhythms. The Fundamentals of Rhythm can also be used by music students who want a thorough understanding of all aspects of rhythm. It can be used to help you improve your sight reading and your basic rhythm skills. The book includes practice suggestions to help guide you on your way to becoming a better musician.
Whether you play the piano, guitar, bass, drums, wind instruments, brass, percussion, harmonica, or any other instrument, this book can be used by everyone. Of course, singers can use the book, too. Non-musicians can learn about rhythms as well, by clapping and humming or even whistling the rhythm patters in the book.
